“Paths are made by walking”, wrote Franz Kafka. Or as the poet Antonio Machado said, “There is no way. The way is made by going.”

For me that means that are no pre-made paths in life. Or, at least if there were one, it wouldn’t 100% suit each of us anyway.

Each of Us Is Unique

Many of us engaging in a process of self-transformation and personal growth would describe ourselves as being on a path. But whose path? I hold that it must be uniquely ours, because no one has our exact background or life experiences despite certain similarities and commonalities. We are each of us one-off models. Even twins sharing the same DNA have differences.

So we are each of us unique at every level of our being. And therefore so is our path.

Our Traveling Companions Come and Go

Yes, we will have companions along the way. Some of these will journey with us for a distance; others will leave our company in short order. We will encounter teachers of one type or another on our path. These may influence the direction we take and the pace of our journey. In time their presence recedes.

But ultimately our path is just that. Ours.

Paths Are Made One-Step at a Time

We create our path step by step through our decisions conscious and unconscious, large and small.

And so we progress along our path each day. It may seem like we are stuck in the same place. But that is an illusion. Each day brings change and evolution whether we notice it or not, whether we wish it or not. Each day we travel our path step by step.

We are the initiators and the creators of this journey of ours. We will seek companionship, guidance and support along the way. All wise things to do.

But in the end, we make our own path. And it is made by walking.
